Concept Strategy
RIBA 3
We are sometimes asked to provide a concept fire strategy. This is a fire strategy that is developed at the very early stages of a project to help stakeholders better understand the requirements of regulations, the pros and cons of different guidance as well as the alternative ways of achieving an appropriate level of safety.
A concept fire strategy is particularly useful when dealing with medium or large complex buildings, particularly those that have a mixed use. It helps everyone understand the basic minimum requirements for issues such as staircase numbers, travel distances, fire resistance of various fire separating and load bearing elements, fire fighter access and so on.
Early clarity on these issues means designers can shape the positioning and internal layouts of a building more easily such that a flexible design is achieved cost effectively with the minimum of fuss downstream.
