Innovation
Training
Education is at the heart of everything we want to achieve. This is why, when we first became Semper, we immediately rolled out a 12-month internal training programme for our staff. This covers the advent of fire engineering, failures within the current system, the benefits of change and how we think change can be best achieved.
It is also why, for the last 3 years, we have been one of the biggest contributors to the IMFSE training programme and why we have continued to provide financial support for our own staff to do degrees, MScs and more recently, PhDs.
We are also proud supporters of the Ogden Trust which aims to increase the uptake of those interested in STEM by supporting physics education and engagement for all young people (4-18), particularly those in under-represented groups.
The business will continue to support those who wish to study further, on the proviso that any such study has clear and obvious benefits to industry and the company’s wider aims.
Transition
The innovation team has a remit to develop and promote risk-based solutions.
We recognise that typical guidance will always have a role to play, but for larger more complex buildings we would prefer to use methods that consider the reliability and the cost effectiveness of the measures provided, as well as the safety levels achieved.
This type of approach aligns with the ALARP (“As Low As Reasonably Practicable”) methodology promoted by the HSE. It is a method used in more mature engineering disciplines and one we are keen to see used for building fire safety design.
