Process

This diagram shows the various ways we approach projects. We typically deviate from guidance (Route 1) and demonstrate how comparable levels of fire safety (Route 2) can be achieved using alternative fire safety measures. With the comparative approach it is relatively easy to demonstrate compliance but this approach provides no explicit measure of fire safety. Whilst we would prefer to design using an absolute approach (Route 3) using probabilistic methods and cost benefit analysis, this requires explicitly stated acceptance criteria which is not always available.
